Did you ever wonder why your neighbors roof is full of snow and your roof has very little or no snow at all?
Your roof might be trying to tell you something. The most likely cause is a poorly insulated attic. The lack of insulation allows warm air from your living space to escape into your attic. Other causes may be air leaking into the attic through spaces in the ceiling (usually through lighting or electrical fixtures) or through cracks. Poor ventilation in the attic may also contribute to the problem.
Why does this matter?
- You’re wasting heat and heat costs money, lots of money. Heat escaping into your attic is just like leaving a window open all winter.
- The snow melting can cause an ice dam on the roof where water can back up under the shingles and into the house causing costly damage to walls, ceilings and the sheathing on the roof. It can also re-freeze and cause damage to the shingles.
What you can do to fix the problem.
▪️Install more insulation and seal all cracks and gaps from the living space.
Attics are an important component of the house. They are designed to allow air flow in and ventilation out, creating a dry and even temperature inside. We’ve seen plenty of DIY projects done improperly. That is why we always recommend that you consult with a professional. It could end up saving you money in the long run.
Have a happy, healthy and warm winter.
